When asked ”What or who inspired you to become an apprentice electrician?” Jen replied: “There was a careers day at school where I met Lizzie Kenyon (now my lecturer) and Marion McGovern (my SECTT Training Officer) who showed me that being a girl shouldn’t stop me trying to be an electrician”. Jen left School half way through 5th year to take up her apprenticeship with her employer, this was after two weeks work experience. “Working on site is amazing even if it is male dominated. The crack is great and the interaction with other trades is good too. The funny looks I get for being a girl in a boiler suit are hilarious and make working on site even more fun”.
One of her ambitions is to travel the world using her Electrician’s trade as a passport. Her advice to others looking for a job in the Electrical Trade is “Never give up. You might not get the response you want the first time but don’t give up. Be strong, stubborn and show the employers that you are the person they want to employ”.
