How do I become an electrician?

You'll need to pass a Pre-employment Assessment, consisting of colour vision, numeracy and technical questions.

How do I get on a Modern Apprenticeship electrical course?

Once you have passed the Pre-employment Assessment your name will be put on a list and sent to employers who will make the selection.

What are the educational requirements?

Good basic mathematical ability and good use of English

What age do I have to be?

There is no age limit however most apprentices are between 16 and 21.

How often will I attend college?

You'll attend block release at college for 19 weeks in the first year, 11 weeks in the second year and one week in the third year.

When does the Modern Apprenticeship scheme stop?

Once you are a qualified electrician, usually three and a half to four years depending on your progress.

Do I get paid to go to college?

Yes, you are employed from day one and get a wage throughout your training.

Where do I find a vacancy?

Once you have passed the Pre-employment Assessment, SECTT will circulate your details to employers, or you can contact local employers yourself. Normally there are between 500/600 apprenticeships every year throughout Scotland.
